When to skip a good-looking setup
The best traders are not only finding opportunity. They are protecting attention, risk budget, and decision quality when conditions are wrong.

A setup can be valid and still be untradeable
A chart may show a clean pattern while the spread is wide, the stop is oversized, or your daily risk budget is nearly spent. Valid structure does not override invalid conditions.
Use a skip hierarchy
Skip first when the hard invalidation is unclear. Next, skip when the required risk is outside your limit. Then skip when the setup conflicts with a rule in your playbook or a known event window.
Do not negotiate these rules in the moment. If you want to change them, do it during a scheduled review with a sample of trades in front of you.
Log the avoided trade
A skipped setup is data. Record the symbol, reason, and what happened afterward. Over time you will see whether your filters protect capital or merely hide fear.

Use the Pre-flight decision and Journal notes to keep the reason visible. Review skipped trades alongside executed trades so your process is measured by decision quality, not just activity.
